FADE IN:
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS COURTYARD – DAY
In the open courtyard of a modern, well funded school, two girls stand close together but facing opposite directions, looking at their phones. The first girl, JULIA, has straight black hair with brown eyes, wearing leggings and a t-shirt. The other, ANNA, has bouncy brown hair with blue eyes, wearing an expensive, floral-patterned dress. ANNA turns to look over at JULIA.
ANNA
Hey! I’m Anna! What’s your name? Are you excited for the first day of high school?
JULIA turns off her phone and turns to face ANNA.
JULIA
Hi! Yeah, I’m excited, but also nervous. I’m Julia.
ANNA
(with slight confusion)
Oh, that’s cool…
JULIA
(noticing the confusion)
Is everything alright?
ANNA
Yeah of course! Um, I was just wondering, like why, your name isn’t more like, um, Indian? You’re Indian, right? I mean, you just, look like it-
JULIA
(surprised, but regains composure quickly)
Yep, yep, yep! Super Indian! Both my parents were born in India.
ANNA
And you?
JULIA
Well, I wasn’t born there. And, about my name, I mean, I don’t even know. It’s just the name my parents wanted to give me.
ANNA
(with sincerity)
Yeah, well, I think it’s cool.
JULIA
(with matching sincerity)
Thanks.
A group of girls walks towards Anna. One of them,ELLA, calls out to ANNA.
ELLA
Hey Anna! Oh, I love your dress.
ANNA
(with even more enthusiasm then before)
Really? Thank you so much. Love yours too.
ELLA turns to face JULIA slowly, and looks her up and down. JULIA shuffles her feet, waiting, and ANNA watches on anxiously.
ELLA
Oh, and you must be Julia.
JULIA
Um yeah, how did you know?
ELLA
I mean, you’re like the only new person here in ages; the news spreads fast. Also, everyone was shocked to see you at church.(pause) Especially wearing pants.
JULIA
(embarrassed, defensive)
Honestly, I just think they’re more comfortable.
ELLA
(harshly)
I mean, don’t you have any fancier clothes?
Also, what kind of Indian has the name Julia and goes to a Catholic church?
JULIA
(flabbergasted)
Um, what?
A bell RINGS.
ELLA
Well, gotta go. See ya, Julia.
ELLA and the other girls start walking away, but ELLA stops, clearly waiting for ANNA.
ANNA
Um, bye Julia.
JULIA
(softly)
Bye.
